WASHINGTON: American President Barrac
k Obama and Lady First
Michel Obama met Friday with 16 years-old Malala Yousufzai, an advocate for girl’s
education and the target of a Taliban assassination attempt who was nominated
for the Nobel Peace Prize.
President Obama met with Malala on the same day the Nobel
Peace Prize was a awarded to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical
Weapons.
The Pakistani teen Malala had been considered a front runner
for the prize and was in Washington to speak at two events.
The white House says the president wanted to thank Malala
for her work on behalf of girl’s education in Pakistan.
Malala was 11 when she becomes an activist for women’s
education, freedom and self determination in Pakistan’s Swat Valley, where the
Taliban banned women from attending school in 2009.
Malala was shot in the head in OCTOBER 2012 while she was
home from school. She was flown to a hospital in Britain, where she now lives.
Her memoir “I am Malala” was published Tuesday.
