Islamabad: The head of the Pakistani Talban was killed by a
U.S. drone a strike on Friday, security and Taliban sources said, in a blow to
the fragmented movement fighting against the nuclear-armed south Asian nation.
He was Pakistan’s public enemy No.1. The United States
offered a $5 million reward for his capture. He succeeded his mentor, Baitullah
Mehsud, who was killed in a US drone strike in August 2009. Hakimullah Mehsud,
the young ferocious and vengeful chief of Pakistan’s most feared militant group-the
Tehreek-e-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) survived at least two US drone strikes in
the past. However on Friday, his luck might have just run out.
“We confirm with great sorrow that our esteemed leader was
martyred in a drone attack”, a senior Taliban commander said
The drones fired four missiles at a compound in Danda Darpa
Khel, a village about 5km round about 3 miles from the regional capital of
Miranshah, sources said. Hakimullah Mehsud had been attending a gathering on 25
Taliban leaders to discuss the government’s offer of talks they said.
His bodyguard and driver were also killed, resources said
The information could not be independently verified because
journalists have no access to the affected areas.
